Kaplan Business Challenge

Kaplan Professional specialises in delivering finance and business training to individuals and organisations throughout the world. Through our various training programmes over the years, we have realised the importance of ensuring that finance training is ‘bought to life’ and made relevant to delegates, especially those without a formal finance background. This understanding has culminated in the development of the Kaplan Financial ‘Kaplan Business Challenge’ (KBC™).

The KBC encourages the application of financial, analytical and decision making skills and allows delegates to manage a company in a highly competitive environment. Many of our clients have used the game successfully to support training at all levels within their organisation, from induction through to senior management grades.

A real world experience
The KBC is a business workshop simulating real world business. Throughout the workshop delegates, playing in teams, will work through actual business scenarios making strategic decisions. They will see how decisions impact on the growth or performance of their business and on the other teams.

The Game
The game simulates a contract-led manufacturing business with long lead-times, supply issues, and the need to create shareholder value in a competitive international environment. Delegates need to analyse market projections, determine corporate strategy and develop detailed sales, purchasing and production plans. These plans are then implemented in competition with other teams in the room.

Having put these plans into action, they will see the financial consequences of their decisions, as they prepare the financial statements (being the Income Statement, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statement). There is then the opportunity to analyse these statements using key value metrics such as Return on Capital Employed (RoCE). Finally, they face the people that appointed them, as they present their results to the shareholders!

Cash is King
As finance trainers, we understand the importance of cash management in a business, and the fact that profitable businesses can still fail due to a lack of cash flow. The KBC demonstrates this in a highly visible way on the board. Delegates will see where the cash comes from, where it goes and why it needs to be managed. For all businesses; small, medium and large, understanding the importance of cash is crucial for survival and growth.

Success strategies for every decision maker
The KBC teaches delegates essential skills that every business decision maker should know.

After the workshop, delegates typically have enhanced their skills in the areas of creating budgets, business planning, market analysis, sales forecasting and investment decisions. In addition, they will have worked together in competitive teams, giving HR departments valuable insights into delegates ‘soft-skills’, including team building, presentation skills, negotiations and delegation.

Logistics
The KBC is an extremely flexible learning tool. It can be run over one, two or three days either as a stand alone programme or as part of a more formal management development programme. Presentation sessions can be ‘wrapped around’ the KBC sessions to ensure that the learning is placed into the correct context within the business. Programme sizes from 12 to 30 delegates can be accommodation, and most important of all no prior knowledge of, or formal training in, finance is required.
